In cybersecurity attackers have a structural advantage over defenders: they can succeed with a staggeringly high failure-rate (not caring that most attacks get blocked at the perimeter). Meanwhile, defenders lose when that single successful attack goes unnoticed regardless of how many attacks were successfully stopped. Disproportionate consequences similarly advantage attackers: typical times to detect and contain that one successful attack are still measured in weeks and months. Yet high-availability and resiliency characteristics built-in to "Well-Architected" microservices offer defenders an opportunity to turn the tables and rob attackers of their asymmetric advantages. The key missing ingredient is a sufficient early-warning system that can detect and respond to advanced threats.

In this presentation, Jeff Deininger, a Principal Cloud Security Engineer, will use a simulated attack to demonstrate how advanced threat detection works with commonplace architectural elements to deny attackers the crucial traction needed to establish a foothold at the beginning of a campaign, leaving attackers feeling like they are inescapably 'walking on ice'.

Security technology roll-outs often fail because of the following: 1) Weak Security Culture - users don't see value or understand the importance of taking action. 2) Security teams often fail to consider user experience in purchase, configuration, set-up and training of security technology, like endpoint security 3) End User communication about new technology is not communicated to the right users, at the right time, during the right stage of the project.

- What security features does Heroku offer that the customer can control and how have these evolved over time? - How do you balance the security of the application, with the security of the deployment, with the security of the platform? - What are some tips and/or advice for deploying applications and keeping them secure during the lifecycle? (e.g. as a developer I may run applications in a secure environment, but then down the line someone runs my container with --privileged and exposes a security hole). The goal being our audience learns what to consider when choosing a platform (or platforms) to run applications from a security perspective.

LexisNexis Risk Solutions recently released its biannual Cybercrime Report covering July 2020 through December 2020, which details how the evolving threat landscape created new opportunities for cybercriminals around the world, particularly as they targeted new online users. Analysis shows that the under 25 age group is most vulnerable to fraud attacks while the oldest age group is second most vulnerable and loses the most money. The stark risk at both ends of the age spectrum emphasizes the importance for companies to protect both new-to-digital and vulnerable customers when transacting online in 2021. The report also provides a full year review which highlights how 2020 saw an overall decline in human-initiated attacks, while bot attacks accelerated.

Many security teams have accepted their Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) as little more than a compliance check-off. IDS reliance on bi-modal signatures is brittle, easily evaded by attackers, and often referred to as an alert canon. In this talk, we'll be discussing what is missing from traditional IDS and how to easily fill the security gaps with NG-IDS capabilities with modern network detection and response (NDR).

The 2020 SOC Survey results are in and the author, Chris Crowley, will discuss the detailed results in the report and how they can help individuals and organizations reduce the drag on our global community due to insecure information systems. Effective security operations rely on monitoring your data and being prepared to defend yourself and your organization. Chris will explain why he believes that the classic SOC will move, over the next few years, to MSSPs and how to be ready when threats are detected.
